Job Description

Instruct and evaluate student psychomotor skills in the areas of skill acquisition, reinforcement and mastery in EMS Basic Life Support education programs, provide simulation activities, tutoring, and remedial assistance to students, provide feedback to program faculty regarding skills practice processes and curriculum, attend meetings and required training, participate in ongoing professional development activities, work effectively and collaboratively in a diverse educational environment, utilize high levels of energy, creativity, and motivation to foster learning, demonstrate current knowledge of EMS Basic Life Support education standards, scope of practice and local protocols, adhere to National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, Virginia Department of Health Office of EMS, Commonwealth of Virginia, Virginia Community College System, Thomas Nelson Community College, Health Professions Division, Fire and EMS Department/Program regulations, policies and procedures, as well as program accrediting agency standards. The Lab Instructor I, as designated by the department/program head/chair, may serve as a lab instructor mentor to help guide and orient new lab instructors to the College, division and department/programs, policies, procedures and expectations.

Hours are not to exceed 29 hours per week.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent. Current unrestricted certification as an Emergency Medical Technician [EMT] (National Registry or Virginia Certification). Must be able to work at all campus locations. Criminal history and other background checks will be required of the finalist candidate for the position. Satisfactory reference and background checks are a condition of employment. Drug screening may also be required.

Preferred Qualifications

Associate, Bachelors or Master’s degree in Emergency Medical Services, Fire and Emergency Services, Public Administration, or other emergency services related field or degree with a Pre-Med concentration. Minimum of one year of experience as an emergency medical services provider at the EMT level. Recent experience as a lab instructor or preceptor in a CoAEMSP-accredited Emergency MS education program. Knowledge of and experience with competency-based educational techniques. Knowledge of EMS simulation best practices. Experience with high-fidelity simulation processes, practices and equipment. Knowledge of standardized patient concepts, processes and practices. Knowledge of national, Commonwealth of Virginia and/or community college EMS curricula. Experience preparing students for practical/clinical simulation skill acquisition, evaluation and industry examinations practices/procedures. Current certification as a Virginia Office of EMS Education Coordinator. Current instructor-level certifications in any of the following areas: Basics Life Support (AHA-BLS), Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS), Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCC) and/or Tactical Combat Casualty Emergency Care (TECC).

Special Requirements

Hours of duty: Varies to include evenings and weekends.

As a condition of continued employment, employees must complete new employee entrance training and/or various programmatic employment processes.
