Job Description

Blue Ridge Community College (BRCC) is committed to innovation and flexibility ensuring high quality education and training is available to all who have the ability and interest to pursue an education leading to a life-long profession. The BRCC Aviation Maintenance Technology (AMT) program represents the latest in aviation education technologies in a facility with classrooms and lab at the Shenandoah Valley regional Airport. The AMT program offers three certificates: Airframe Maintenance Certificate, Powerplant Maintenance Certificate, and a Career Studies Certificate as a Light Sport Aircraft Mechanic as well as an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Aviation Maintenance Technology. The Aviation Maintenance Technology program has always been a leader in quality maintenance education.

Recent equipment improvements have enhanced that quality to position the program for the next decade and beyond. The AMT program is seeking highly qualified candidates to fill a full time faculty position. The workload for this position to include teaching and service.

Duties:
The successful candidate will be expected to develop and teach courses in the AMT program at BRCC, in compliance with the FAA approved FAR Part 147 curriculum. Incumbent will be proactive in developing and modifying curriculum for delivery and other teaching modalities in aviation maintenance, including distance education. The primary responsibility for this position is teaching a variety of undergraduate courses. Course subject areas may be any subject within FAR Part 147 Appendix B, C and D depending on program needs and faculty qualifications.

Additional responsibilities include providing service to the program, division, college and community. As a faculty member, the candidate will be active in program issues/decisions/improvements, advising students, gathering program/industry data, FAA compliance and maintaining required records. Ultimately, a commitment to student development, teaching excellence, program improvement and regulatory compliance is the goal of the faculty within AMT.

Instructional Component:
• Teaching 30 credit hours of courses (including labs) during the academic year plus additional courses as assigned during the summer. Courses may be offered in person, hybrid, or online depending on program needs.
• Ensure the proper delivery of the FAA approved curriculum.
• Participate in program instructional evaluation and improvement.
• Ensure safe practices are followed in labs, with tool usage and the handling of hazardous materials.
• Develop and design laboratory projects.
• Maintain FAA compliant records and documentation.
• Provide student advising and career guidance.

• Upkeep and upgrade laboratory as needed.
• Participate in AMT program meetings and projects to include, but not limited to:
o Student data gathering and analysis.
o Assessment data gathering and analysis.
o Accreditation data gathering and reports.
o Program needs assessment, justification and reporting.
o Program advocacy, internal and external.
• Provide service to:
o BRCC.
o AMT Department.
o Aviation community.

The workload for this position includes teaching, institutional responsibility, scholarly and creative engagement, and service.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required for this Position:
FAA Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics certificate.
• Competence with computer hardware, programs (e.g. word processor, spreadsheet, database) and internet resources common to the field and education.
• Competence with hardware, tools and equipment common to the field.
• Possess strong interpersonal, communication, organization and cooperation skills.
• Committed to professional growth and development, continued learning, integration of new technology and current pedagogy.
Typical Education or Training Required for this Position:
• Associate degree in Aviation Maintenance Technology or a Bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering Technology, Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautical Science, Education or comparable degree from an accredited university.
Length of Time and Type of Experience Required for this Position:
• Minimum 2 years related occupational experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities for this Position:
• Master’s degree in a discipline shown above from an accredited university.
• Full time equivalent teaching or a combination of one year full time equivalent teaching plus two years full time equivalent aviation maintenance, engineering technology or engineering industry experience is required.
• Competence with distance delivery, both synchronous and asynchronous.
• Inspection Authorization and/or other FAA certifications or designations.
• Experience with online course information systems.
• Experience with curriculum development, FAR 147 curriculum requirements, 2-year program development & delivery.
• Specialized field experience or education; such as NDI, composites, electronics, structural repair, etc.
• Evidence indicating successful partnership skills and experience maintaining partnerships with commercial, private and public agencies and organizations, including advisory boards.
• Evidence of professional scholarly activities, including involvement in professional organizations, grant writing, and/or publications.
• Familiarity with accreditation procedures and national standards for the discipline.
• Familiarity with the aviation education considerations and needs in the Commonwealth and beyond.
• Experience leading or working in a diversified workforce in a multi-cultural setting.
• Evidence supporting a commitment to and the ability to work effectively within the scope of the Community College mission.
• Ability to qualify to teach Light Sport Repairman Maintenance, Airplane courses in accordance with FAA Order 8000.84B.
