This position is Part-Time, up to 30 hours per week, Monday - Friday, with occasional weekend activities. Job Description

This Part-Time position supports the internal communications and public relations functions in the 12-county VDOT Salem District of southwest Virginia. As a Communications Coordinator, your role will be to assist the Communications Manager with internal and external communications programs and deliverables for employees, local and state audiences, government officials and news media.

In this position, you will write, edit, design, produce, and distribute newsletters for internal and external audiences; interview employees to develop and write articles and feature stories; serve as writer, editor, graphic designer, photographer, and videographer to generate content to be delivered through various communications mediums such as intranet, web, social media, electronic bulletin boards, presentations, news releases, traffic alerts, brochures, newsletters and fliers; and perform general administrative office duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate should possess the ability to interview employees and write news stories; Knowledge of Associated Press style; Skill in graphic design and production of various visual communications products using software including PowerPoint, InDesign, Photoshop in the PC platform; Ability to use digital (still and video) cameras; Ability to multi-task in a busy office and meet deadlines; Ability to perform administrative duties as assigned. Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

Skill in all aspects of newsletter production preferred; Knowledge of Adobe Premiere Elements; Skill in using content management systems such as Crown Peak or Dreamweaver.

Special Requirements

Submit two of your best professional writing samples and a sample of a visual communications product you have produced such as a newsletter, PowerPoint presentation, brochure or flier. References, work history, and DMV records will be verified. Fingerprint based background check required.

This position is designated as essential and as such, all duties associated with this position may be required during emergency situations, at times outside of normal working hours. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required.
