Job Description

Patrick Henry Community College (PHCC) is a comprehensive two-year college of the Virginia Community College System, serving the City of Martinsville and the counties of Henry and Patrick. PHCC serves approximately 3,500 credit and almost 2,700 non-credit students annually and, consistently ranks among the top ten “Most Tech-Savvy” community colleges in the country by the Center for Digital Education. It is one of the nation’s 82 “Achieving the Dream” Leader Colleges. The college offers transfer programs, in addition to career-track and certification programs, and serves more than 200 employers through workforce development. It is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

Position Summary: Patrick Henry Community College is seeking a self-motivated and team-oriented individuals to serve as Career Coach to local high school and community college students (Patrick County Site). The Career Coach will work closely with high school and college personnel, community college stakeholders, and business/industry professionals to help secondary students easily transition to postsecondary education and successful career pathways.

This position is funded through a grant and is contingent upon renewal of funding.

Minimum Salary: $33,598, based on qualifications and experience; plus excellent benefits package.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, training, and/or work experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services, Education or a related area that demonstrate the ability to perform the essential functions of the job.


KSA’s and/or Competencies required to successfully perform the work:

• Knowledge of counseling and/or career development theory with emphasis on adolescents and career development
• Strong written and oral communication skills; effective in communicating with students, administrative staff, faculty and parents
• Organization and data collection skills to track students who receive services; able to interpret and report data as required.
• Skill in using computer software, internet for communication, data collection and research
• Ability to collaborate with both campus and high school personnel to provide services to students
• Ability to work in a fast paced environment with a diverse student population
• Ability to work a flexible schedule that might include evenings, and travel to and from campuses and employer partners in our service region for outreach services and follow-up services
• Ability to articulate college admissions process and help students in completing appropriate forms

Preferred Qualifications

Education, training and/or work experience equivalent to a Master’s degree in Education, Counseling or a related field that demonstrate the ability to perform the essential functions of the job

  • Academic advising experience
  • Experience conducting assessments for placement tests
  • Experience working with community college students
  • Experience working with social service agencies and employers
