Job Description

The Department of Early Childhood/Elementary/Special Education invites nominations and applications for the position of Assistant/Associate Professor of Reading/Literacy Education, Adjunct. The department provides undergraduate and graduate programs for students seeking preparation to work with children in the community, agencies, and PreK – 12 settings. The teacher education programs are approved by the Virginia Department of Education (DOE) and accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

Incumbent’s duties and responsibilities shall encompass teaching on-site and online courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels; maintain an active research agenda and submit grants; sever on departmental, school and university committee’s; advise students.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Selected candidate will possess a Doctoral degree in Reading, Language Arts or Literacy Education.
2. Demonstrated knowledge of and skilled in grant and scholarship writing.
3. Demonstrated knowledge of the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
4. Skilled in the use of assessment and instructionally based technology when delivering teaching concepts and principles.
5. Demonstrated ability to communicate to a diverse student-body audience, both verbally and in writing, with emphasis applied to a commitment to diversity.
6. Demonstrated ability to grasp and advocate an institutions teaching and learning philosophy, preferably in an institution of higher education.
7. Extensive background, generally equivalent to three years, working within Early Childhood Education, Elementary, or Special Education, specifically working with children in grades K-6 in an elementary setting in a classroom teaching capacity.
8. Proficiency in and commitment to distance learning via online modalities.
9. Must be able to begin period of instruction August 2016.
