Job Description

Germanna Community College is seeking a faculty-ranked, full-time Counselor to provide academic counseling and new student advising by meeting individually with new and undecided students or making group presentations. As part of a team, the counselor will guide students through identifying academic pathways, developing academic plans and assisting students in overcoming obstacles which get in the way of achieving academic goals. The counselor will help to plan and implement programs and activities which support student success, positive problem solving skills, and independent learning. The counselor will conduct outreach and interventions to struggling students at risk of failing, so they stay in school and successfully complete their programs. The position involves planning, implementing and assessing the effectiveness of personal development and wellness programs which foster positive life/work balance, healthy coping skills and resiliency. The counselor will respond effectively to students in crisis and collaborate with local emergency response services to obtain help and treatment for those in distress.

This is a twelve-month faculty position. Salary is commensurate with rank and credentials plus State benefits. Appointment date: April 1, 2017. Position will be filled contingent upon available funding.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in counseling or student personnel services related program.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience providing counseling and academic advising in a community college setting
• Experience working with students in distress, with brief counseling and/or crisis intervention
• Experience in counseling diverse student populations
• Experience with Peoplesoft, web-based early alert systems,
