Job Description

Central State Hospital in Petersburg, VA seeks a psychiatrist to serve as a dynamic, collaborative treatment team leader in a challenging and rewarding environment. This is a rare opportunity to make an immediate and significant impact on the lives of individuals who are disenfranchised and underserved.

Central State Hospital houses civil and forensic patients, and includes Virginia’s only Maximum Security program. This program allows extensive learning opportunities on a wide variety of psycholegal issues, and the chance to become a seasoned forensic expert. The hospital pays for psychiatrists to attend formal forensic training at the Institute of Law, Psychiatry, and Public Policy at the University of Virginia, and the Office of Medical Affairs ensures ongoing educational opportunities are made available to medical staff.

We are seeking a psychiatrist who will be a leader not just of his/her own team, but a clinical leader across the hospital to work together with all staff to advance the hospital’s ongoing efforts to operationalize principles of mental health recovery and trauma-informed care. The successful candidate will have opportunities to supervise nurse practitioners and physician assistants if desired, and interested individuals will also have the chance to be mentored on administrative and policy issues to enhance their opportunities for advancement. Your work here will be unfettered by the hassles of managed care, and you will be supported by an administration that values self-care and work/life balance. Our psychiatrists are able to maintain an excellent quality of life. We are a 277-bed Joint Commission accredited facility that is in the pre-planning phase for the building of a new facility. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to participate in the planning and development of the new hospital.

Petersburg is part of the greater Richmond metropolitan area. Richmond is the state capital and is a vibrant, affordable city often mentioned in national news media for its progressive arts community and creative, world-class culinary scene. Richmond is a 2-hour drive from Washington DC, 1.5 hours from Shenandoah National Park, and 2 hours to the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean. For those who prefer rural living, to the immediate west of the hospital is beautiful countryside for miles on end. Petersburg and Richmond are both rich with historic sites, and Petersburg boasts historic neighborhoods recently undergoing a renaissance.
