Job Description

Purpose:

Tutors typically specialize in a math and assist students in other subjects taught at the Piedmont Virginia Community College. Other subjects are based on the tutor’s academic background and comfort level. Math tutors may also be assigned to an MTT course where they will provide support for developmental math students and developmental math instructors.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Tutors assist students individually and collectively in one or more of the following areas: biological sciences, business, humanities, mathematics, physical sciences, social sciences, technologies, and writings. Tutors are not responsible for instructing students or for knowing all the answers. Tutors encourage students to use the many resources available to them- instructors, notes, peers, textbooks, and others- to solve problems on their own. A good tutor does not do the work for the student, but instead equips the students to help themselves.
