Job Description

Patrick Henry Community College (PHCC) is a comprehensive two-year college of the Virginia Community College System, serving the City of Martinsville and the counties of Henry and Patrick. PHCC serves approximately 3,500 credit and almost 2,700 non-credit students annually and, consistently ranks among the top ten “Most Tech-Savvy” community colleges in the country by the Center for Digital Education. It is one of the nation’s 82 “Achieving the Dream” Leader Colleges. The college offers transfer programs, in addition to career-track and certification programs, and serves more than 200 employers through workforce development. It is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

Position Summary:
Patrick Henry Community College is seeking an energetic and self-motivated individual for the position of Workforce Career and Credentials Coach. This position will assist students interested or enrolled in noncredit workforce training with career and educational planning services, program admissions, financial aid, successful training and credential completion, identifying work based learning opportunities , and job placement and retention. The workforce career coach should have basic knowledge and experience in most, if not all, of the following areas.
• Career assessment
• Development of individual action plans
• Job search, resume writing, interview, and professional soft skills
• Communicating and building networks with a variety of workforce partners and stakeholders
• Working with employers for job referrals, work experience or placement
• Workforce development programs (e.g. WIOA, RVHI) and credentials
• Labor market information
• Student resources including financial aid (e.g., WCG, FANTIC) and supportive services
• Listening and helping skills
• Effective problem-solving skills
• Working with individuals from underserved populations
• Data systems, operations, and linkages
• Microsoft Office and social media

Duties:
• Help students explore their interests and career paths, identify applicable workforce training, and discuss barriers and solutions to ensure successful program completion and credentialing.
• Engage in group and one-on-one coaching sessions with current and prospective students.
• Research with program managers the appropriate strategies for helping students complete as well as the credentialing requirements so that knowledgeable information can be shared.
• Assist students with enrollment, accessing financial aid and other supports available at the college or via workforce partners in the community.
• Meeting with instructors as needed to gain understanding about course requirements and student progress.
• Identify employers in the college region seeking to hire students who complete training programs and credentials
• Arrange for work-based learning experiences for students such as internships, externships, job shadowing, and the like
• Assist students with job application procedures and provide support and advice through the interviewing and hiring processes
• Continue to provide coaching and support to students who request it during the first few months of employment to help them overcome workplace stressors, time management, conflict management, etc.
• Work with PeopleSoft and WES to understand the various reports required to extract relevant information.
• Assist with ongoing analysis and reporting of student and program progress and credential attainment.
• Assist with collection and verification of credential attainment and job placement.
• Assist with FANTIC and WCG applications so that students are properly and appropriately enrolled.
• Engage with the community through relevant events in an effort to market the WCG programs.
• Present information to community groups, businesses, job fairs, conferences, professional development events, workshops, etc., about WCG and workforce programming

Travel may be required to provide coaching services or to meet with stakeholders.

Workforce career coaches will be expected to participate in regular, ongoing professional development offered by the VCCS system office, in both online and face-to-face formats, at times and dates to be announced.


This position is funded through a grant and is contingent upon renewal of funding.

Minimum Salary: $32,619, based on qualifications and experience; plus excellent benefits package.

Minimum Qualifications

Education training, and/or work experience equivalent to an Bachelor’s Degree in counseling, human resources, social services, or related field.

Valid Driver’s License

Coaches should have completed or be willing and able to complete the Virginia Career Coach Certification Program after employment.

KSA’s and/or Competencies required to successfully perform the work:
Ability to build relationships and provide excellent coaching services to students pursuing short-term workforce training.

Excellent recordkeeping skills.

Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
Basic knowledge of the workforce development system in Virginia and support resources and some experience in accessing supportive services for clients.

Excellent communication skills and demonstrate the ability to collaborate with community college and workforce partners and employers.

Preferred Qualifications

Education training, and/or work experience equivalent to an Master’s Degree in counseling, human resources, social services, or related field.
