Job Description

This restricted position is with the Department of Corrections’ Corrections Construction Unit. This position main administrative office is based in Powhatan, Virginia and provides construction services and oversight to all VADOC facilities statewide. The selected candidate must be able to travel extensively throughout Virginia to fulfill job requirements. Statewide residents are encouraged to apply.

This position offers the unique opportunity to gain greater leadership experience while utilizing masonry skills. The incumbent will support the organizational objective to provide productive, effective, and cost efficient management of programs and services that support and enhance field operations to achieve the goals, mission, and vision of the Department.

As a working Commercial Construction Superintendent, this position is responsible for on-site management of Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) major renovation and construction projects.

This position “owns” the day-to-day functions and responsibilities for their assigned construction projects, including, but not limited to, planning, coordinating and supervising a variety of semi-skilled VADOC offenders; ensuring project safety, managing material delivery/control, promoting quality control and providing technical assistance related to construction methods and equipment.

The Construction Superintendent is expected to possess a working skills and knowledge of the multi-crafted construction trades found in commercial work, with an emphasis in the commercial construction trade of masonry.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent. Valid Driver’s License. Major construction trade areas required with a strong and proven working experience in the trades of commercial masonry construction. Skills in setup and utilization of civil site work instruments as Builders Grade and Transit-levels, Line and Rotary Laser construction levels. Proficient in reading, interpreting, and effectively communicating and applying architectural and engineering construction plans and specifications to job site conditions. Extensive knowledge of commercial construction terms, methods, commercial construction building codes. Progressively-responsible commercial construction industry experience, particularly with on-site working labor management of large-scale commercial construction projects and in meeting deadlines; superior time management skills are essential. Demonstrated skill in making determination of appropriate construction mans, and methods, equipment resources and preparation of construction materials requirements. Working knowledge Microsoft Office software (e.g. Excel, MS Project, Word, Outlook).

Ability to manage one’s own time to perform work as assigned with minimum direct supervision. Possess good leadership and organizational skills, a positive attitude, strong work ethic, attention to detail, and be safety oriented. Ability and desire to work beyond comfort zone within construction trades. Ability to travel alone, statewide, with regular weeklong overnight stays in the performance of job duties. Must have strong speaking and writing skills to assure courteous and effective communication.

Ability to work regularly out of doors, in extreme working conditions hot and cold, climb ladders to heights of 40 foot and be able to move, maneuver, transfer and transport items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include: Working experience in flat work concrete and civil site construction work, including a General working knowledge of all construction trade skills normally found in commercial construction; Commercial Construction Heavy Equipment Operators experience with Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with minimum Class “A” endorsement. Experience in loading and hauling heavy construction equipment. Prefer First-aid and 10-hour OSHA certification.

Special Requirements
