Job Description

Eastern State Hospital, located in Williamsburg, Virginia, was founded in 1773, with a well-intentional emphasis on community focused mental health care. This state of the art campus, situated on 500 acres, consists of two patient care buildings with 300 patients, and a highly skilled staff of over 900. Eastern State Hospital is part of the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) system, and is accredited by the Joint Commission. ESH invites applications for the position of a Forensic Evaluator.

Reporting directly to the Director of Psychology and the Pre-Trial Coordinator, duties and responsibilities consist of the following:

1. Provide Forensic assessments (Competency to Stand Trial and Mental State at the Time of Offense) for defendants ordered to in-patient treatment.
2. General Psychological assessments.
3. Tests of malingering/feigning.
4. IQ and personality testing.
5. Sex Offender risk assessments.
6. Neuropsychological screenings.
7. Treatment Team consultation.
8. Program development for pretrial defendant.
9. Court Testimony
10. Researches material relevant to resident specific treatment needs.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Licensure as a Clinical Psychologist.
2. Demonstrated knowledge of clinical conditions that affect competency to stand trial, sanity at the time of the offense.
3. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of relevant Virginia code and psycho-legal criteria for persons found IST, Sanity at the Time of the Offense, and persons adjudicated NGRI.
4. Demonstrated knowledge of group and individual treatment modalities for forensic populations.
5. Demonstrated knowledge of hospital/community/agency resources.
6. Demonstrated experience providing expert testimony.
7. Demonstrated experience to provide consultation and/or training to the behavioral health and legal community.
8. Demonstrated experience to conduct forensic evaluations (Competency to Stand Trial, Sanity at the Time of Offense, Post-Restoration Competency evaluations).
9. Demonstrated experience in conducting and completing program specific assessments and neuropsychological screenings.
10. Demonstrated experience in conducting initial psychological assessments for newly admitted patients on acute admissions / forensic units.
11. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of forensic populations.
12. Demonstrated experience in researching material relevant to resident and specific treatment needs.
13. Demonstrated knowledge of DOJ, CMS and JCAHO guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Experience as a Forensic Evaluator.
2. Training and experience in the delivery of forensic psychological evaluation and treatment.
3. Experience utilizing forensic assessment instruments.

Special Requirements

Offers of employment are contingent upon passing the background check (Virginia State Police and FBI) and the drug screen test.
