Job Description

Provides administrative oversight for officer case supervision and report writing to ensure compliance with DOC and district policies. Enhances public safety through the use of Evidence-Based Practices in the training and supervision of District #28 staff, with a focus on the encouragement of better outcomes for probationers and parolees.

Provides day-to-day supervision and training of District #28 staff under the direction of the Chief Probation Officer. Assigns cases and investigations. Prepares Employee Work Profiles and evaluate employee work performance formally and informally on an ongoing basis. Reviews officer casework and Presentence Reports. Handles casework on vacant caseloads as required. Assists Chief Probation Officer in carrying out administrative functions. Acts as unit manager in the absence of CPO.

Minimum Qualifications

Considerable work experience within Community Corrections. A valid driver’s license. Working knowledge of federal, state, and local laws governing Probation and Parole. Considerable working knowledge of Virginia Department of Corrections Community Corrections practices, policies, and procedures. Knowledge of the criminal justice system and effective treatment modalities. Demonstrated ability to understand, interpret and communicate the policies, procedures, and standards of the Department of Corrections. Competency in the use of Evidence-Based Practices, to direct the resources of the district toward interventions that produce positive, measureable outcomes. Ability to model strong leadership skills, to act at all times as a positive force for pro-social change and to motivate staff to achieve their best work. Use of case review skills to improve officer performance. Demonstrated ability to train new officers to attain competencies required to carry out the work at a high level.

Preferred Qualifications

Prefer Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with coursework in criminal justice, a related human services field, or equivalent applicable experience or training. Prefer working experience supervising professional and support staff.
