Job Description

Supports the Department of Corrections’ (VADOC) mission, goals and objectives through the installation, repair and maintenance of electrical systems in an adult correctional facility.

Performs preventive and corrective maintenance to maintain the integrity of the existing structures and furnishings. Performs advanced electrical work in the installation, repair, and maintenance of the facility’s electrical systems. Supervises offender workers in the installation, maintenance, and repair of the facility’s electrical systems. Keys data into the Total Maintenance System (TMS) for preventative and inventory purposes. May respond to emergency callbacks for service on a rotating basis.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent. Valid Driver’s License. Broad knowledge of electricity. Interpretation of blueprints.Considerable electrician experience. Demonstrated ability to install, diagnose, repair, and maintain complex electrical and electronic systems. Working knowledge of electrical practices. Working knowledge of related governmental codes and standards relating to the trade. Demonstrated skill in the use of tools and supplies related to the trade. Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices. Demonstrated ability to lead and supervise the work of others. Demonstrated ability to keep narrative and statistical records relating to the maintenance and repair of equipment.

Ability to use a computer, keep accurate and complete records. Ability to perform work with minimal margin of error and work independently with little or no supervision. Ability to communicate effectively; work as an effective team member; and to receive and execute instructions from the immediate supervisor and /or lead worker. Ability to safely and frequently move and handle heavy objects weighing 75 pounds or more; to maneuver materials up and down stairs; to climb and work from elevated work stations such as ladders and scaffolds; and to work for long periods of time standing, walking reaching, bending, pushing/pulling. Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions including extreme temperatures.

Preferred Qualifications

Prefer Master Electrician certification. Graduation from an electrician’s apprenticeship program or vocational training program is preferred. Prefer multiple trades experience. Prefer correctional experience.
