Job Description

Patrick Henry Community College is a comprehensive two-year college of the Virginia Community College System, serving the City of Martinsville and the Counties of Henry and Patrick. PHCC serves approximately 3,500 credit and almost 2,700 non-credit students annually and, consistently ranks among the top ten “Most Tech-Savvy” community colleges in the country by the Center for Digital Education. It is one of the nation’s 82 “Achieving the Dream” Leader Colleges. The college offers transfer programs, in addition to career-track and certification programs, and serves more than 200 employers through workforce development. It is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

We are seeking applicants for the position of Assistant Coordinator of Library Services.

Duties:

Reference Service
Provides multiple level reference service to students, faculty, staff and community users, including:
Ready reference
Research consulting
Bibliographic verification and citation help
Reference to remote users
Readers’ advisory

• Reference competencies to be based on RUSA’s “Professional Competencies for Reference and User Services Librarians”
• Demonstrates understanding of the Reference Interview/Interaction process.
• Demonstrates understanding of the organization of information and reference search strategies.
• Responsible for conducting virtual/digital reference service (using local applications or through VCCS LRC Live).
• Responsible for promoting Information Literacy through training sessions, workshops, and formal classes.
• Performs library tours for individuals, groups, or classes as needed.
• Keeps current on new resources added to the library (both print and digital) for subject knowledge, “gap analysis,” and to stay current on library subject boundaries.
• Maintains knowledge of current events for potential research topics.
• May be required to conduct in-depth literature searches, create annotated bibliographies, or literature reviews for faculty research and/or PHCC administrative projects.
• Keeps current in the profession through professional development (Webinars, conferences, journals, monographs).

Interlibrary Loans (ILL)
• Processes all day-to-day ILL transactions through WorldShare Interlibrary Loan software.
• Prepares monthly and annual reports of ILL borrowing/lending.
• Reviews Interlibrary Loan borrowing requests for collection evaluation (gap analysis).
• Monitors VIVA ILL Listserves.
• Insures copyright compliance.
• Attends VIVA ILL forums as needed.

Administrative
• Develops and implements all library policies with the goal of supporting research and instructional needs of students, faculty, and community. Clearly communicates library policies to students, faculty, and staff through appropriate venues (face-to-face, email, library homepage)
• Prepares annual reports and statistical materials for departmental requests, internal library services evaluation, and external agency requirements (VCCS, ACRL, IPEDS, etc.).
• Prepares monthly services report for Dean of Technology.
• Prepares annual library report for Dean of Technology.
• Prepares and implements Strategic Plan for library services.
• Oversees library budget and coordinates fund allocation and expenditures in coordination with Dean of Technology.
• Responsible for all library credit card transactions and for reconciling the monthly credit card statement in accordance with VCCS/PHCC policies.
• Responsible for submitting credit card logs, monthly statements, and all associated paperwork to the Business/Purchasing Office in accordance with VCCS/PHCC policies.
• Responsible for annual credit card “Cardholder Training.”
• Oversees annual MALiA (Mid Atlantic Library Alliance) RFP contracts.
• Oversees and signs contractual agreements between library and database vendors, unless such contracts require higher level authority for signatures (VP of Financial and Administrative Services)
• Oversees contractual agreements for consortia/shared (VCCS/VIVA) databases.
• Monitors and contributes to “LincSite,” the VCCS forum/discussion board.
• Stays current in library science through relevant literature review and professional development activities, including workshops, seminars, webinars, and classes.
• Provides copyright guidance and insures copyright compliance for photocopying, digital copying, Interlibrary Loans, and Closed Reserves.
• Oversees patron obligations (Aleph/SIS) and coordinates any set-off debts with Business Office.
• Represents library at faculty meetings and college functions as required.
• Serves as Virginia Records Officer and oversees destruction of public records according to Virginia Public Records Act.

Collection Development and Maintenance
• Annually reviews the Collection Development Policy to insure that it accurately states the mission and goals of the library; that policies covering materials selection, choice of formats, subject boundaries, and means of access are up-to-date and implemented.
• Reviews and maintains physical and digital collections to insure that subject areas and titles are relevant to curriculum (serves the information needs), that the collections “meet high standards of quality in content, expression and format,” and that the collections fulfill the criteria established in the Collection Development Policy.
• Keeps current on evolving information technologies and formats that could enhance the library’s collection development goals, support the curriculum, and “meet students where they are.”
• Participates in VCCS, VIVA, and local database trials; may be required to submit reviews of databases under consideration for purchase by VIVA/VCCS.
• Coordinates subject area development and deselection with Technical Services/Circulation librarian.
• Oversees all print, ebook, audiovisual, and electronic database purchases in accordance with established PHCC and state regulations.
• Oversees purchase of all library supplies in accordance with established PHCC and state regulations.
• Establishes and maintains communication with faculty to insure that the needs of their curriculum are reflected in the collection and that research requirements for their class assignments are addressed by library services.
• Insures that all copy cataloging, original cataloging, and processing are compliant with AACR2, RDA, MARC standards, and local library policies.
• Maintains the library Web page to insure that it provides an accurate and up-to-date inventory of resources and that the navigation design creates, to the extent possible, “an effortless interaction with information.”
• Insures that all proprietary database linker codes (for the EZ Proxy server) are accurate and work correctly from outside the campus IP range.
• Updates library client software as needed (OCLC Connexion, Aleph Integrated Library System, etc.)
• Insures that the library is safe, clean, and conducive to academic study.
• Keeps current on publishing trends and current events relating future research/collection development topics.

Liaison
• Coordinates with VCCS for all Integrated Library Systems (ILS) maintenance and software upgrades (OPAC, Circulation, and Cataloging modules).
• Acts as library representative for all Integrated Library Service (ILS), software training.
• Acts as library representative for all OCLC client software training.
• Acts as PHCC representative for all VCCS/VIVA library committee assignments (Shared Collections, Professional Development, ad hoc committees, etc.) as needed or required.
• Provides input as needed for VCCS Steering Committee, System Office, or VIVA initiatives.
• Acts as technical support contact for all VCCS and VIVA database/proxy access issues, as well as for all locally purchased database technical support issues.

Instruction
• Coordinates and schedules bibliographic instruction as requested by faculty.
• Develops and maintains instructional (LibGuides) for database and general bibliographic instruction.
• Develops LibGuides for specific courses (as requested)
• Responsible for in-class training on Web searching, database searching, library orientation, and general academic research.
• Responsible for promoting Information Literacy through training sessions, workshops, and formal classes.


Hiring Range: $56,000, based on qualifications and experience; plus excellent benefits package.

Minimum Qualifications

Masters of Library Science (MLS) or Masters of Library and Information Science (MLIS) or Masters of Science in Library Science (MSLS)

3 years of increasing administrative experience in a community college library


KSA’s and/or Competencies required to successfully perform the work:

-Excellent communication skills
-Understanding of library systems architecture (ILS)
-Current on relevant electronic resources for academic libraries
-Understanding of general library administration procedures, including budgeting, resource allocation, and
personnel management
-Understanding of library purchasing procedures
-Reference interviewing skills
-Conversant with current and near-future digital trends that will or might impact library services

Preferred Qualifications

•Experience in higher education administration
•Supervisory experience
•5 years of increasing administrative experience in a community college library
