Job Description

This position is located at the Academy for Staff Development in Crozier, Virginia.

Supports the Department of Corrections (VADOC) and Academy for Staff Development’s (ASD) mission, goals, and objectives by ensuring the provision of high quality, effective, work-related training, career, and organizational development services.

Provides, designs, and delivers basic and in-service training programs, workshops, and seminars for agency personnel; primarily newly hired corrections officers in Basic Corrections Officer Training-Academy Training. Creates lesson plans and develops instructional materials, audio-visuals, and examinations/performance evaluations. Interacts with agency personnel, regulatory representatives, and adjunct faculty. Assesses training needs using feedback tools and conducting facility visits.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. Valid driver’s license. Demonstrated experience in training and/or progressively responsible experience in adult correctional facilities. Working knowledge of and demonstrated ability to apply the principles of adult learning theory in the training environment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to create lesson plans in accordance with Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), Virginia Department of Corrections, and Academy for Staff Development training standards. Demonstrated ability to maintain complete and accurate training records for all participants with established guidelines. Intermediate computer literacy specifically in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Ability to work independently, or as part of a team. The selected candidate must maintain physical fitness to be able to participate in physical training, as required.

Preferred Qualifications

Prefer degree from an accredited college or university with coursework in behavioral science, education, training, criminal justice, a related field, or equivalent applicable education, experience, and/or training. DCJS Instructor Certification in General, Firearms, Defensive Tactics, and/or Driver Training preferred. Candidate will be required to obtain these certifications within 1 year of the date of hire.

Special Requirements

The selected candidate will be required to obtain DCJS Instructor Certifications in General, Firearms, Defensive Tactics, and Driver Training within 1 year from the date of hire.
