Job Description

Crater Health District comprises the Cities of Hopewell, Emporia and Petersburg, as well as the Counties of Sussex, Greensville, Surry, Prince George and Dinwiddie. Position base will be determined on business needs but will have responsibilities to serve all sites. Manages complex array of environmental public health programs, focused on intermediate to long term actions such as strategic planning, environmental hazards response, community health assessment, allocation of financial resources, data collection and analysis, and staffing. Responsible for regulatory actions and collaborates with community partners for community outreach and education, to include addressing environmental disparities in communities across the health district. Actions include administering and enforcing regulations and policies, program and individual performance assessment and improvement, and supervision of staff. Program examples include: food and milk safety, water hazards prevention (onsite sewage, private wells, and recreational water), hotels and motels, migrant labor camps, swimming pools, and shellfish growing area protection. Member of District Management Team.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of natural sciences and/or environmental health. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing. Demonstrated ability to use sound judgment in decision making and function in public settings that may be emotionally charged. Ability to interpret, apply, and communicate complex rules and policies to diverse groups including district staff and citizens in accordance with accepted CLAS standards (Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services). College level work or equivalent experience in environmental health, biology or related field. Basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) required.

Preferred Qualifications

Prefer experience in rural and/or urban environmental health and supervision. Intermediate to advanced knowledge and experience in use of computers and computer applications (i.e. data analysis, Share Point, Tableau, GIS, etc.). College degree preferred. Current VDH Standardization in food safety, Onsite Soil Evaluator License, and/or Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS).

Special Requirements

Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a state and federal criminal history background check, a Department of Social Service’s Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check, U.S. HHS IG Exclusion List check, employment reference check, proof of education (diploma or transcripts), professional licensure verification, and eligible through E-Verify. Conviction information, ascertained through a fingerprint-based background check, is a final step in the application process (if selected for the position).

Required to participate in district events, meetings, emergency operations, etc. May require work during some weekend &/or evening hours. District and occasional statewide travel are required; therefore employees must maintain a valid driver’s license and adhere to VDH’s drive safety policy.
