Job Description

The Commonwealth Center for Children & Adolescents (CCCA) is Virginia’s only public acute psychiatric hospital for children and adolescents. CCCA serves youngsters with a variety of serious psychiatric and behavioral difficulties from across the Commonwealth. Treatment is provided by multidisciplinary teams in a relationship-based, collaborative, trauma-informed treatment model of care. The facility is located in a vibrant town in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley within 30 minutes of major university towns. Treatment at CCCA is collaborative, relationship based and trauma informed. CCCA serves children and adolescents by providing high quality acute psychiatric evaluation, crisis stabilization, and intensive short-term treatment that empowers children and their families to make developmentally appropriate choices and that strengthens children’s hope, resilience and self esteem. The Center provides 24-hour care throughout the year; therefore, ALL STAFF ARE ESSENTIAL. CCCA is currently recruiting for a Nursing Services Associate (NSA) on 2nd shift; working every other weekend. This position will involve both staff mentoring responsibilities and direct involvement with children. This position will also provide, guidance and direction/supervision of staff and patients as the need arises. The NSA will provide mentoring, guidance and direction for direct care staff: DSA II and DSAIII/Supervisors. In addition, the NSA will provide support to RN’s to promote relationship based collaborative, trauma-informed care. Assists Nurses in building and maintaining teamwork between shifts and across units. Supports all Nursing/Direct Care staff in promoting dignity and respect in interactions with children, families and staff. Additional responsibilities include: – provide proactive therapeutic interventions with children and adolescents – Participate and lead the implementation of individual clinical treatment plans – Provide assessments of children’s strengths and abilities – Monitor and participate in scheduled treatment with children & adolescents. -Participate in training of new and existing staff and take applicable courses to prodive such training. -Be a role model for staff as well as for patients The NSA will develop supportive and therapeutic relationships with children in a noncoercive manner. Additional responsibilities include helping children identify goals and collaborating with them to achieve those goals while recognizing the role that trauma plays in shaping emotional and behavioral responses.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience working with children and/or in a mental health facility required. Six months prior experience as a Direct Services Associate or similar role required for internal candidates. One year minimum in experience in mentoring, training or supervising required of external candidates. Demonstrated knowledge of the characteristics of the assigned population of children and knowledge of the principles of child development, general needs of individuals with disabilities and principles of supervision is essential. Must have demonstrated the ability to plan and collect behavioral data, write reports, implement and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment plans. Must have excellent organizational skills. Ability to complete on-line training modules and/or college level coursework in a human service field is required. Must be able to perform essential physical elements of the position that may consist of standing, walking, bending, stooping running and assisting children/adolescents.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior supervisory experience in child and/or adolescent mental health or similar setting is preferred. Individuals with college degrees in a human service field (Psychology, special education, etc.) preferred. Prior experience in training and/or educating others preferred. Bi-lingual language skills desired; Spanish or Sign language preferred.
