Job Description

Each September the Division of Legislative Services, the primary legal and general research agency of the Virginia General Assembly, accepts applications for temporary, full-time proofreaders to assist with preparation for the next session of the General Assembly. Primary duties of the editing staff include editing and proofreading draft legislation, reports, and other documents and publications prepared by the Division’s legal and research staff.

Work for the 2018 Session begins October 30, 2017, and ends January 19, 2018, with a possible extension through March. Some evening and weekend overtime is required in December and early January in addition to 40-hour workweeks. Pay is $20/hour.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree, computer proficiency, and proofreading/editorial experience are required.

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate will demonstrate command of English grammar, mechanics, and usage; the ability to understand and edit complex legal and technical text, with accuracy and attention to detail on short turnaround; computer proficiency, including advanced knowledge of MS Word 2010 or later and good communication skills.
