Job Description

The Court of Appeals of Virginia is seeking applicants for the position of Chief Staff Attorney.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Chief Staff Attorney directs and supervises the work of six staff attorneys and two paralegals for the Court of Appeals of Virginia. The staff attorneys review criminal petitions for appeal and appeals of right in domestic relations, workers’ compensation, and administrative cases. They prepare memoranda and draft orders for the Court’s consideration. The Chief Staff Attorney is responsible for reviewing the staff attorneys’ substantive work product and scheduling their assignments. The Chief Staff Attorney is also responsible for personnel administration, including hiring, training, and performance evaluation. Additionally, the Chief Staff Attorney prepares and coordinates the annual law clerk orientation conference. The Chief Staff Attorney reports directly to the judges of the Court of Appeals of Virginia.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must be graduates of an ABA-accredited law school and a member of, or eligible for membership in, the Virginia State Bar. Competitive applicants will have at least five years of legal experience in a practice-oriented, academic, or court setting; excellent analytical and writing skills; and will demonstrate competence in the management and personnel functions described above. Candidates must be proficient in computer-based legal research and word processing. The successful applicant also will have the ability to work collaboratively with the Court staff, attorneys, and judges.
