Job Description

This posting will be recruiting for one Lieutenant position in the following regions:

Region I, which is based in the Charles City Regional office and is comprised of several counties/cities including but not limited to, Richmond, Chesterfield, Charles City, Norfolk, Gloucester, Essex, Accomack and Southampton.

Region II, which is based in the Forest Regional office and is comprised of several counties/cities including but not limited to, Amelia, Lunenburg, Danville, Roanoke, Lynchburg and Nelson.

Region III, which is based in the Marion Regional office and is comprised of several counties/cities including but not limited to, Craig, Pulaski, Grayson, Tazewell, Smyth and Buchanan.

These positions will provide staff level assistance to the Region Captain in managing regional law enforcement personnel, operations and resources in support of agency services pertaining to wildlife, fish, and boating related law enforcement services specifically to ensure public and employee safety is addressed and documented in the provision of these services.

Minimum Qualifications

Considerable knowledge of law enforcement practices and procedures as related to wildlife and fisheries management and recreational boating. Knowledge of management principles and practices, state and department purchasing, accounting, and budgeting procedures. Demonstrated ability to use law enforcement equipment, vehicles, and boats safely and proficiently. Demonstrated ability to plan and conduct law enforcement operations, to conduct thorough investigations, to collect and preserve evidence, to interpret and apply complex laws, regulations and court rulings. Ability to provide relevant court testimony, to effect a forcible arrest, to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, to deal courteously and tactfully with the public, to provide educational presentations and to meet the physical demands of the job. Demonstrated ability to manage and coordinate training as it relates to specific skill sets and certifications. Demonstrated ability to develop, manage and execute a regional budget. Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise and evaluate employees and provide feedback that ensures productivity and growth. Ability to gather relevant information under difficult circumstances, maintain confidentiality and maintain composure during stressful situations. Ability to manage projects and to work collaboratively and effectively with internal and external staff to accomplish agency objectives.
High School Diploma or equivalent, valid driver’s license and Conservation Police Officer with law enforcement certification from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS). Considerable experience in law enforcement, as a Conservation Police Officer and progressively responsible supervisory/management experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in criminal justice, police science, public administration, education or a related field. Considerable and progressively responsible law enforcement supervisory experience. Experience with budget development and management. A combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for the required education.

Special Requirements

*Selected candidates will be assigned to the Region Office and will routinely report to the Regional Office unless the nature of the work or supervisor direction indicates otherwise. Selected candidates will be required to establish a residence within 50 driving miles of the region office regardless of region boundaries.
