Job Description

The Virginia Indigent Defense Commission (VIDC) is now accepting applications for the position of Assistant Public Defender I for the Bedford Public Defenders Office. The qualified candidate should be committed to advocating on behalf of indigent clients. The VIDC is dedicated to protecting the rights and dignity of our clients through zealous, compassionate, high-quality legal advocacy. The Assistant Public Defender reports to the Public Defender of the Bedford Office and is employed at will. A successful candidate is subject to fingerprint based criminal background check.

Duties:
Duties include conducting client and witness interviews, working with staff investigators to investigate cases, filing pretrial motions and litigating motions and identifying appropriate sentencing alternatives for clients. The attorney will be responsible for trying cases in the General District, Juvenile, and Circuit Courts, and may also research, write and argue appeals before the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court of Virginia.

Minimum Qualifications

Virginia State Bar admission is required along with knowledge of criminal law, criminal procedure and evidence, experience performing comprehensive case specific legal research and analysis, and experience trying both felony and misdemeanor cases is preferred. The ability to argue legal positions effectively and persuasively, recognize, formulate and implement viable case defense theories, investigations and litigation strategies, and learn and accept constructive criticism are also important. The qualified candidate will have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, multi-task, prioritize assignments, and remain organized. A valid driver’s license with the means to travel to all courts and regional jails are required.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience working in criminal defense of indigent clients is preferred.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a fingerprint-based criminal background check, verification of employment history and reference verification.
