Job Description

The Virginia Indigent Defense Commission (VIDC), a Commonwealth of Virginia Independent Agency which provides legal representation to indigent criminal defendants though the administration of a state public defender system and the certification of court appointed counsel, is now accepting applications for the position of Secretary I for the Richmond Public Defender Office. The qualified candidate will provide clerical support for attorneys in the Public Defender office. The Secretary position reports to the Public Defender of the Richmond Office and is employed at will. The successful candidate will be subject to fingerprint based criminal background checks.

Duties
Duties for the position include greeting persons entering the Public Defender Office as well as operating a multiline telephone to answer, screen and forward calls, take messages and schedule appointments. Additional qualifications include typing a variety of legal documents, maintaining a filing and record keeping system, sorting and distributing mail, and interacting with the public defender office colleagues, clients and judicial system personnel.

Minimum Qualifications

The position requires a working knowledge of office practices and procedures as well as creating and editing letters, memos and legal documents. Experience in use of computer software to include word processing, spreadsheet and database applications are needed along with managing electronic and manual filing systems. Keyboarding skills, accuracy and attention to detail are required. The qualified candidate will have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and work independently and dependently in a fast paced, team driven environment. The qualified candidate will have prior experience providing administrative and clerical support in an office setting using Microsoft applications to include Word and Excel.

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate will have prior clerical experience in a criminal justice office environment. Additionally, the preferred candidate will have the ability to communicate with Spanish speaking clients.

Special Requirements

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a fingerprint-based criminal background check, verification of employment history and reference verification.
