Job Description

The Commonwealth of Virginia’s Management Fellows (VMF) program seeks emerging leaders with the desire to serve the people of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and a willingness to commit to a 2-year fellowship of state-level service and learning. Applicants should demonstrate an interest in public service and volunteerism, and the capacity to work as both a leader and a participant in team efforts. Critical thinking is a sought-after skill.

The selected candidate participates in seminars of 64 instructional hours over the 2-year fellowship, as well as 40 instructional hours participating in a leadership and management professional development certificate program. Fellows receive the Virginia Public Sector Leader certificate from Virginia Tech upon successful completion of the fellowship program. Fellows work directly in state agencies via rotations – for 8-month periods. Each rotation is accompanied with a highly-motivated and trained agency mentor. Agency rotation assignments carry specialized job descriptions where fellows develop new skills in hands-on agency roles in the provision of state services, and meaningful connection points with agency executive leadership. By the end of the program period, fellows will have direct experience with 3 state agencies. The fellows position requires independent research and writing in support of leadership instruction assignments and agency projects. Written and oral skill-building and presentation structure techniques comprise an additional 32 instructional seat hours for agency presentations. Collaborative small group projects with the fellows cohort should be expected.
