Job Description

The Eastern Shore Health District seeks a Certified Nurse Practitioner to provide clinical patient care and supportive public health services for the District’s Maternal and Child Health and Family Planning Programs, including prenatal care, family planning/GYN services, and diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections and communicable diseases. The District serves the counties of Accomack and Northampton. Predominant caseload assignment is to provide prenatal care of approximately 350 clients per year; additional clients are seen for family planning, communicable disease, and STI service areas.

Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner. Diagnoses and treats conditions in accordance with established protocols and in the absence a physician at health department clinics; provides specialized care in obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN), family planning (FP), and communicable and sexually transmitted diseases (STD). Interviews patients to obtain health history; performs physical examinations and diagnostic procedures; orders, interprets, and evaluates tests to identify patients’ clinical problems and health needs; records physical findings and develops care plans; initiates treatment in the absence of a physician; initiates referrals and consultations; formulates prognosis based on patient’s condition and clinical findings; counsels patients in health care management; counsels and provides information to patients regarding methods of contraception. Prescribes medications and contraceptives in accordance with protocols, practice agreement, and prescriptive authority. Inserts, removes, and assesses complications from contraceptive implants and intrauterine devices (IUD’s). May perform and/or precept colposcopies.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires licensure as a registered nurse and certification/licensure as a Nurse Practitioner in the Commonwealth of Virginia or in a compact state. Must possess CPR Health Care Provider or HeartSaver AED certification, and possess a valid Driver’s License. Considerable knowledge of assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning and execution in the area of certification, preferably including maternity, prenatal, family planning, GYN, STD/STI at a minimum. Considerable skill in the performance of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures within the area of certification. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, document findings, recognize legal limits in practice, and to obtain and interpret clinical data.

Preferred Qualifications

Prefer experience in the fields of OB/GYN, prenatal care, family planning, communicable diseases, and sexually transmitted diseases/infections. Knowledge and experience in use of computers and computer applications preferred. Bilingual/multilingual beneficial.
