Job Description

The Communications and Development Copywriter works closely with Director of Communications and Marketing and Director of Development. His/her primary responsibility is to gather, coordinate and disseminate information by writing action-inspiring messaging, students ‘successes and other pertinent copy for both internal and external communication such as fund raising, advertising, social media campaigns, marketing materials, website content and like assets. He/she will serve as a primary project manager for handling student communications and the development of a weekly student online newsletter called Student Navigator. He/she will assist in the creation of unique selling angles for academic offerings, promotions, and development writing projects, as assigned, from inception through delivery. The Communications and Development Writer will also serve as project manager, editor, and/or principal writer for a wide variety of print and electronic projects, including funding proposals for individuals, corporations, foundations, and other organizations; campaign-related promotional materials; annual stewardship reports for select foundation donors; and project summaries for a diverse array of fundraising goals. For Example; types of projects include formal proposals, letters of inquiry, brochures and flyers, direct mail pieces, invitations and web site content. Hershel will periodically provide updated content for Development sections of College web site. He/She will create keyword-rich content, tag lines to engage stakeholders (prospective students, existing students, parents, donors, local and business community, College and Foundation Members, faculty and staff. He/she will develop action-inspiring messaging/copy for email campaigns, online ads, and website content, social media campaigns and like assets.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Advertising, Marketing or related field. Knowledge of copywriting, editing, and proofreading techniques using Chicago and AP Style. Internet design and operation principles a must. Experience in a higher education environment highly preferred. Five to ten years of experience in public relations in an academic institution or education environment. Strong written communication, copywriting and copyediting skills. Proficiency in English grammar. Good interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate and interact with people at all levels and background in fund raising. Organizes material, determines slant or emphasis, and writes story according to prescribed editorial style and format standards. May take photographs to illustrate stories. Takes action to take advantage of opportunities to tell Thomas Nelsons story to the media and both internal and external stakeholders. Provides College information by engaging in various medium of media (web/online, print, broadcast, and social media such as Facebook, Twitter etc.,). Be self-motivated, hard-working, well organized, and resilient to ever-changing timelines, requests and deliverables. Ensures that a consistent brand presence and voice is maintained across all media. Works with other team members to ensure accuracy and compliance with College and brand guidelines

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s Degree preferred with years of marketing, advertising, public relations, organizational communications, or journalism experience.
