Job Description

Enforce the criminal and traffic laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the rules and regulations of the College. Investigate and submit written reports on crime-related offenses, traffic accidents, complaints, and suspicious activities. Conduct follow-up investigations of offenses. Apprehend and detain suspects. Collect and safeguard evidence needed for prosecution and give testimony in court. Issue summons for violations of state criminal laws. Transport suspects to Magistrate for processing and to acquire warrants. Enforce the traffic rules and regulation of the Commonwealth within the jurisdictional boundaries of the College by patrolling parking lots and adjacent roadways. Conducting traffic stops and issuing summons to violators as required. Respond to emergencies and requests for assistance. Administer emergency first aid to those in need of assistance. Safeguard college property and funds. Lock and unlock exterior/interior doors. Patrol and inspect buildings by performing physical security checks. Perform traffic and crowd control. Assist visitors by supplying directions and general information about the College. Post directional signs for special events on campus. Raise and lower flags. Provide escort service when requested. Operate police and communications equipment. Act as dispatcher and work special assignments as required. Perform all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be a U.S. citizen. Graduation from an accredited high school course of study or successful completion of a GED. Must possess a valid operator’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia and must have a satisfactory driving record of zero plus points. Must be at least 21 years of age. Must be of excellent moral character and reputation. Must not have been convicted of or pled guilty or no contest to a felony or serious misdemeanor or any offense that would be a felony if committed in Virginia. Must pass a background investigation, physical agility examination, psychological evaluation, polygraph examination, and a medical examination. Must possess the ability to be courteous yet firm with the public. Must be alert and possess the ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions. Must possess good skills of observation and memory. Must be mentally and physical fit. Must be able to work rotating shifts, to include weekends and holidays. Must possess the ability to work cooperatively with a diverse constituency. Must possess the ability to walk extensively and to work outdoors. Must possess good verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to accurately distinguish and identify colors. Must be physically capable of participating in departmental bike patrol program. Candidate must be a Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Certified Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with Section 15.2-1705 and 15.2-1706 of the Code of Virginia. Must be able to work at all campus locations. Background checks will be required of the finalist candidate. Satisfactory reference checks are a condition of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior security or police-related experience in a college or university. College degree in related field or an equivalent combination of experience and training. Current certification as a law enforcement office in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Current certification in CPR. Familiarity with the College and constituency. Familiarity with college’s fire, safety and security programs and general policies and procedures.
