Job Description Seasonal, On-call wage positions – No state benefits are provided.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Charlottesville Residency is seeking on-call Operators for openings in Albemarle, Greene and Madison Counties for work during winter and snow operations. During inclement weather, will operate and maintain highway equipment such as dump trucks, front end loaders, and tractors; clear snow and ice from roadways; apply abrasives and chemical on road surfaces and perform manual labor.


These position are designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with the jobs are required during emergency situations and requires work outside of normal hours including nights, weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must be skilled in operating highway equipment during inclement weather conditions and performing preventive maintenance on equipment. Must be able to perform manual labor to include standing, bending, and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs. and work on-call during day or night shifts to support emergency operations. Must have the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Valid Driver’s License is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience performing snow removal operations. Valid Commercial Driver’s License (minimum Class B with Air Brake endorsement) is preferred.

Special Requirements

These are wage positions – No state benefits are provided. Positions available November 3, 2017 through March 31, 2018. Positions will be filled as needed and recruitment will continue based on position availability and business need.


Safety shoes are required in performance of job duties. Fingerprint background check, references, work history, and DMV records will be verified prior to employment. Pre-employment physical with drug screen will be required.
