Job Description

Provide students with accurate and efficient academic and transfer advising. Advise students on degree and certificate program requirements, expectations and course selection. Assist students in developing educational plans that are consistent with their educational, personal and career goals. Assess and evaluate student’s progress toward completion of their program of study. Interpret and explain college policies and procedures. Understand and follow all applicable college, state and federal policies and regulations, including but not limited to FERPA. Advise and follow up with students experiencing academic difficulties and those identified for early interventions. Provide advising via various modalities including email, online chats, and in-person. Collaborate and direct students to appropriate campus resources to facilitate academic and student success. Participate in Thomas Nelson campus events, student engagement and retention activities.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution. Knowledge of current best practices and theories within advising, admissions, and/or career development. Demonstrated understanding of college programs, academic requirements, policies and procedures. Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally to a diverse and varying population. Excellent organizational, time management and problem solving skills. Strong computer literacy skills and ability to learn new software applications. Must be able to work at all campus locations. Criminal history and other background checks will be required of the finalist candidate for the position. Satisfactory reference and background checks are a condition of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in counseling, higher education, student development or a related field from a regionally accredited institution. At least one year of experience or training in academic advising, admissions and/or career development. Knowledge of the Virginia Community College System or prior academic advising experience in the community college setting.
