Job Description

Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation (JYF) is seeking a qualified individual to support media relations and public communications designed to stimulate public awareness on a national, state and local level of the Foundation, its museums, educational programs, special events and programs, collections and facilities and directly supports the generation of paid admissions. Position provides writing, editing and reviewing services for JYF earned media communications, including social media and website content, with primary focus on special events and exhibitions and participates in direct media contact and publications and marketing materials for distribution on- and off-site. Must be available to work on evenings and weekends and travel as necessary. Positions works under the general direction of the Media Relations Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

Must have strong writing, editing and oral communication skills; understanding of press relations and ability to establish rapport with media; understanding earned media communications opportunities available via electronic and social media, website content and integration into ongoing public relations program; ability to independently perform work tasks efficiently and effectively under pressure and meet tight deadlines. Must possess organizational and coordinating skills and have ability to work effectively on marketing team and with staff at all levels. Proficient with Outlook/Word, Excel and Access software, WordPress website platform and current social media channels and ability to communicate verbally, via e-mail and digital channels. Experience with photography helpful. B.A. in journalism, communication or liberal arts field. Minimum of 4 years’ experience in public/media relations and/or journalism programs, including participating in public/media relations for tourism attractions/destinations and special events and openings.

All full-time and part-time paid staff of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation are required to complete and sign an Application for Employment. These documents require an employee to certify that they have never been convicted for any type of violation. This is above and beyond VA Code §22.1-296.1-C which states “that (i) he has not been convicted of a felony or any offense involving the sexual molestation or physical or sexual abuse or rape of a child; and (ii) whether he has been convicted of a crime of moral turpitude.” In addition, the Foundation completes both name and sex registry background checks through Virginia State Police on all paid and core volunteer staff and the Contractor will (i) maintain all employee certifications on file, (ii) require an employee to update the employee’s certification if the employee later is convicted of any reportable offense, and (iii) will make these certifications available to FCPS for inspection upon request." Foundation staff must also be eligible to work using the E-Verify system through U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
