Job Description

Make a difference in the community! Share your expertise to improve lives. The Prince William Health District is seeking a dedicated professional nurse to join our highly skilled team. This PHN position will independently provide professional nursing care in the community, clinic, home and other venues to assure delivery of the 10 essential public health services. The PHN performs nursing assessments, develops and implements care strategies, including the administration of medication and case management. Conducts disease surveillance and investigation; provides health risk reduction counseling and other health promotion education services to individuals and groups within the health department and community. This position will participate in mass screening and prevention clinics such as immunizations for children and adults. Must be able to collect and analyze data for quality assurance, care planning and informed decision-making. Must be able to exercise critical thinking skills in the care of individual clients and the community.

Minimum Qualifications

Must currently have a Virginia license as a RN or eligible for professional RN licensure in Virginia. Combination of education, knowledge and experience in current nursing practices and public health principles. Require assessment skills to develop plans of care for clients, families and communities. Ability to problem-solve, set priorities and work independently is required. Applicant must possess the ability to counsel clients, families and communities on health issues. Critical thinking skills are a must. Must effectively work with diverse populations and work as part of a team. Ability to interact with internal and external customers in a positive manner promoting public health. Excellent skills in oral & written communication are required to effectively communicate and teach. Must be able to effectively use a computer for data entry, e-mail and Microsoft Office software.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in epidemiology and/or communicable disease investigation and control preferred. Prefer nursing experience in public health or community health. Prefer BSN and/or MPH. Knowledge of Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) principles preferred. Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Special Requirements

Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a state and federal criminal history background check and the Department of Social Service’s Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check, U.S. HHS IG Exclusion List check, employment reference check, and E-Verify. Valid driver’s license and successfully passing a background investigation. Must adhere to the VDH Driver Safety Policy. Must provide own transportation and will be required to travel to other district site locations.
