Job Description

Positions available on the Admissions Unit, Ward C/D on 1st shift, 2nd shift, and 3rd shift.

Psychiatric Lead Care Technicians are experienced with mental health recovery assistance for inpatients. They are seen as resources for PCTs, preceptors, and assist with overseeing unit routines. Working under supervision of a RN, Lead PCTs:
• provide quality client care as part of an interdisciplinary team
• maintain accountability for patients who live in a locked, safe, secure, and therapeutic environment
• create healthy interpersonal interactions with clients on adult acute admissions unit, geriatric unit, and extended rehabilitation service unit
• observe and report feedback regarding interventions, treatments, behaviors, physical and emotional well-being, and other situations
• serve as liaison for Psychiatric Care Technicians to Unit Nurse Coordinator and Head Nurse by communicating pertinent ward/staff issues
• providing leadership, teaching, expert resource, and role modeling to Psychiatric Care Technicians

KSAs and or Competencies required to successfully perform the work:
• Expert knowledge within Psychiatric Care Technician role of human behavior, age-specific needs, and personality development
• Demonstrated ability to effectively apply knowledge of basic treatment measures to promote mental health recovery appropriate to the adult, developmentally disabled or impaired, and/or geriatric populations
• Vision and hearing adequate to recognize and respond to hazardous situations and ensure safety of people at facility
• Excellent communication skills demonstrated at different levels in organization and between departments and shifts
• Ability to observe and describe observations orally, in writing, and electronically
• Ability to work effectively with staff in a team approach and appropriately intervene in crisis or problem situations utilizing conflict management and problem solving skills
• Ability to work overtime in a staffing emergency
• Demonstrated ability to practice infection control measures and appropriately apply standards in daily activities.
• Successful completion of TOVA (Therapeutic Options of Virginia) Training, CPR, and Motivational Interviewing Skills
• Maintain CNA (Certified Nursing Aide) registration in good standing with the VA State Board of Nursing
• Demonstrated role modeling and leadership skills working in groups of diverse team members, ability to provide constructive feedback in assertive yet empowering manner, and project optimism in difficult situations
• Demonstrated ability to teach and assess competencies of new employees in the Psychiatric Care Technician role and to plan/provide client education activities
• Ability to work in a secure and locked environment with individuals who are experiencing acute symptoms of mental illness and/or additional forensic/legal involvement.
• Requires ability to perform repetitious walking and/or standing, bending, lifting and reaching overhead to position, restrain/transfer/transport and/or escort clients, and provide assistance with activities of daily living.
• Ability to work in a secure and locked environment with individuals who are experiencing acute symptoms of mental illness and/or additional forensic/legal involvement.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent is required. CNA certification through VA State Board of Nursing required. Basic computer skills necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Prefer experience working in a health care setting providing basic nursing care. Prefer attainment of Level II Direct Support Professional (DSP) Career Pathway.
