Job Description

12 hour shift position available on the Extended Rehabilitation Services Unit, Ward J. The shift is 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, Saturday, Sunday and 8 hours every other Monday from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Psychiatric Care Technicians assist nurses with:
• providing quality client care as part of an interdisciplinary team
• maintaining accountability in a safe, secure, and therapeutic environment
• creating healthy interpersonal interactions with clients on adult acute admissions unit, geriatric unit, and extended rehabilitation service unit
• observing and reporting feedback regarding interventions, treatments, behaviors, physical and emotional well being, and other situations
• documentation and communication
• use of specialized training for promoting mental wellness recovery

KSAs and or Competencies required to successfully perform the work:
• Basic knowledge of human behavior, age-specific needs, and personality development
• Knowledge of basic treatment measures to promote mental health appropriate to the adult, developmentally disabled or impaired, and/or geriatric populations
• Vision and hearing adequate to recognize and respond to hazardous situations and ensure safety at facility
• Ability to observe and describe observations orally, in writing, and electronically
• Ability to work effectively with staff in a team approach
• Ability to perform infection prevention and control practices and appropriately apply standards in daily activities
• Appropriately intervene in crisis or problem situations
• Perform repetitious walking and/or standing, bending, lifting and reaching overhead to position, restrain/transfer/transport and/or escort clients, and provide assistance with activities of daily living
• Ability to work overtime in a staffing emergency
• Successful completion of training: TOVA (Therapeutic Options of Virginia), CPR, Motivational Interviewing Skills
• Maintain CNA (Certified Nursing Aide) registration in good standing with the VA State Board of Nursing
• Ability to work in a secure and locked environment with individuals who are experiencing acute symptoms of mental illness and/or additional forensic/legal involvement.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent is required. Basic computer skills necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Prefer completion of CNA prior to hire. Otherwise, must obtain during probation. Prefer experience working in a health care setting providing basic nursing care.
