Job Description

The Commonwealth Center for Children & Adolescents (CCCA) is Virginia’s only public acute psychiatric hospital for children and adolescents. CCCA serves youngsters with a variety of serious psychiatric and behavioral difficulties from across the Commonwealth. Treatment is provided by multidisciplinary teams in a relationship-based, collaborative, trauma-informed treatment model of care. The facility is located in a vibrant town in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley within 30 minutes of major university towns. The mission of CCCA is to provide high quality acute psychiatric evaluation, crisis stabilization, and intensive short-term treatment that empowers children and their families to make developmentally appropriate choices and that strengthens children’s hope, resilience and self esteem.

The Mission of the Nursing Department is to skillfully assess children for medical and mental health concerns when admitted for acute psychiatric care. The Registered Nurse Manager provides leadership guidance for the clinical milieus, staff supervision and engages in organizational development.

The Commonwealth Center for Children and Adolescents is recruiting for part-time Registered Nurse Managers, who will work a weekend and holiday shifts in order to meet the supervisory and coverage needs of the evening shift. CCCA is seeking to build a reliable pool of individuals to share the coverage of weekend and holiday shifts. Flexibility and the desired number of hours the candidate wants to work will be considered in scheduling. Selected candidates will be asked to attend leadership meetings when possible. This position works under the direction of the Assistant Chief Nurse Executive. The Nurse Manager serves as a role model and mentor for the nursing department and other disciplines, supervises nurses and direct care staff, and completes the annual performance plan and Employee Work Profile review for employees under his/her supervision. The Nurse Manager serves as Charge Nurse, with the responsibility for oversight of implementation of treatment plans and milieu management (with guidance from the on-call physician), and oversight and coordination of each treatment unit.

Minimum Qualifications

Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Associate Degree or higher in Nursing
Demonstrated experience as a manager and/or supervisor required.

Demonstrated organizational skills and abilities in management of personnel and resources in a fast-paced and demanding setting.

Thorough knowledgeable of Behavioral Health Care and national patient safety goals and the ability to guide and support RNs in relevant goals and standards
Capacity to make sound decisions and guide others in crisis situation.

Demonstrated ability to relate and communicate effectively (both written & verbally) with individuals, families, outside agencies, and other disciplines within the hospital.

Appreciation and valuing of cultural diversity in the population served and commitment to providing care in a manner compatible with patients’ cultural health beliefs and practices.

Basic computer skills.

Ability to maintain all annual RN competencies, including TOVA and CPR, and meet other mandatory trainings provided by DBHDS and CCCA.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (BSN); OR a Bachelors degree in a health-related field, including but not limited to: psychology, sociology, teaching, health sciences, public health.

Knowledge in child & adolescent psychiatric nursing practices.

Electronic Health Record experience

Bi-lingual in Spanish or ASL

Special Requirements

Background & drug screen required. Completion of New Employee Orientation required.
