Job Description

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation is the state’s lead conservation agency. Just across the James River from historic Jamestown in beautiful Surry County, Chippokes Plantation is one of the oldest continually farmed plantations in the country. A working farm since 1619, the park offers modern recreational activities and a glimpse of life in a bygone era. Visitors tour the historic area with its antebellum mansion and outbuildings, stroll through formal gardens, and view antique equipment at the Chippokes Farm and Forestry Museum. A campground and four overnight cabins allow visitors to stay on the historic grounds. The park has an Olympic-sized swimming pool and a visitor center with a gift shop. It also provides opportunities to bike, hike, ride horseback and picnic. Chippokes Plantation also offers wedding packages and meeting facilities.

Duties:
Direct personnel, operations and expenditures in the operation of a major state park providing for programs and services to ensure visitor expectations are met. To ensure department, division and park support through civic activities, media relations and interaction with other governmental offices and/or agencies. Assist Park Manager in overall park operations with direct management of several major operational areas. Responsible for all park operations during the absence of the park manager. The incumbent is required to live in park housing.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required; experience and/or education/training in one or more of the following areas: revenue collection and reporting, budget/ financial management; experience in personnel management/ supervision, staff training; experience supervising buildings/grounds maintenance; experience in hosting special events or programs. Skills and training needed in computer software specifically Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Preferred Qualifications

Sworn Conservation Officer Designation with certification in CPR/ AED and First Aid preferred. A 4-year degree in park administration, recreation, forestry, or closely related field is preferred. Pool, concessions operations, and merchandising experience preferred.

Special Requirements

This position requires shift work which includes weekends, evenings, and holidays. On occasion, critical agency business needs may require position reassignments within the salary range. This position is required to wear state-issued uniforms and equipment. Assistant Park Manager incumbents must reside in state-owned housing and provide security and operational efficiencies during non-working hours, which requires entering into a lease agreement and acquisition of liability and personal property insurance. Must possess or have the ability to obtain: a valid driver’s license; certifications in CPR, AED, First Aid, and other certifications as required.

Sworn Conservation Officer requirements: Must be a US citizen; be at least 21 years old; H.S. grad or possess GED; pass a background investigation including fingerprint-based criminal history records check; possess or be able to obtain certification as a LE Officer in VA from the VA Dept. of Criminal Justice Service which includes accepting responsibilities related to being equipped with and using firearms. Successful applicants: shall not have a felony conviction(s) or have pled no contest to a felony or any offense that would be a felony if committed in VA; shall not have a misdemeanor conviction(s) involving moral turpitude, including larceny, concealment, uttering, embezzlement or perjury; shall not have conviction(s) for a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence; shall not have positive results on pre-employment drug screening.
