Job Description

The Public Health Nurse position is a full-time, state position based in Washington, VA working with the Rappahannock Rapidan Health District. The position provides direct client services and community education in field programs and clinics including family planning, sexually transmitted infections screening/treatment, immunization services, communicable disease surveillance and investigation, and tuberculosis and latent TB infection screening/treatment. Additionally, this position performs in-home screenings of patients for nursing home placement or approval of home waiver services in collaboration with our local Department of Social Services.

Minimum Qualifications

Must possess (or be eligible for) RN licensure in Virginia, CPR certification, and a valid Driver’s License.

Knowledge of current nursing practices, procedures, and principles; principles of public health; and social and economic conditions related to public health.

Ability to assess and to develop plans of care for patients and families; problem solve; establish priorities and work independently using sound nursing judgment; counsel clients, families, and communities on health issues; administer immunizations; perform venipuncture; utilize medical equipment; communicate and work with diverse populations; communicate effectively orally and in writing; to be fit-tested and wear and N95 mask; operate a computer with Microsoft Office and Electronic Health Record.

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate will be:
- a graduate of an accredited school with a BSN
- bilingual (Spanish and English) with the ability to converse fluently in both languages
- an experienced public health nurse

Special Requirements

It is the practice of the Virginia Dept of Health to conduct in-depth background checks on all candidates identified as a finalist for employment consideration. The results of background checks are made available to VDH employing officials. You will be requested to sign a reference release form, and past educational institution and/or employers may be contacted concerning your academic or employment history. Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a state and federal criminal history background check and the Department of Social Service’s Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check, U.S. HHS IG Exclusion List check, employment reference check, and E-Verify. The selected candidate must complete a Statement of Personal Economic Interests as a condition of employment, if applicable (Va. Code § 2.2-3114). Other financial, credit, driving, or other background checks prior to employment may be required for certain positions.

A twelve-month probationary period is required for all new state employees. A new probation period may be required for successful internal candidates.

District events, meetings, emergency operations, etc. may require some weekend and/or evening hours.

Must have or be eligible to obtain a VA driver’s license and provide own transportation (mileage reimbursement provided). Required to maintain a valid driver’s license and adhere to VDH’s driver safety policy; district travel required.
