Job Description

Assesses the nutritional status of and identifies risk factors of pregnant and breastfeeding women and their infants and children who are at risk for poor nutritional related outcomes in order to provide nutritional counseling. Develops a nutritional care plan and follows-up with high risk clients. Provides education and counseling on breastfeeding for all prenatals. Ensures nutrition education classes are of maximum interest and practical use to clients. Participates in the ongoing development and implementation of the district’s WIC setVice plan

Minimum Qualifications

Per Code of Virginia (Chapter 27.1. Dietitians and Nutritionists), a dietitian or nutritionist must have at least one of the following criteria listed below: 1. (i) received a baccalaureate or higher degree in nutritional sciences, community nutrition, public health nutrition, food and nutrition, dietetics or human nutrition from a regionally accredited college or university and (ii) satisfactorily completed a program of supervised clinical experience approved by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association; 2. Active registration through the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association; 3. An active certificate of the Certification Board for Nutrition Specialists by the Board of Nutrition Specialists; 4. An active accreditation by the Diplomats or Fellows of the American Board of Nutrition; 5. A current license or certificate as a dietitian or nutritionist issued by another state; or 6. The minimum requisite education, training and experience determined by the Board of Health Professions appropriate for such person to hold himself out to be, or advertise or allow himself to be advertised as, a dietitian or nutritionist. Successful candidate will have: Registered Dietitian thru the American Dietetic Association or Certified as a Nutrition Specialist by the Board of Nutrition Specialists or Current license/certificate as a dietitian or nutritionist issued by another state or is a Registered Dietitian or Nutritionist by the Board of Health Professions. Bachelor’s or higher degree in one of the following: nutritional sciences, community nutrition, public health nutrition, food and nutrition, dietetics or human nutrition. Basic knowledge of nutrition, growth and development of infants, young children, and childbearing women. Skill in interviewing, counseling and educating patients. Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing, including the ability to communicate practices of breastfeeding and human lactation to patients. Ability to motivate patients to adopt nutritionally sound eating patterns. Ability to work with a diverse population. Driver’s license or eligible, as some local travel required.

Preferred Qualifications

Prefer experience working in an office focused on public health, working with nutrition for women, infants and children (WIC). Prefer experience providing the community with information regarding the WIC program by speaking to the public, handouts and participation in public fairs. Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of public health programs, policies, federal laws and regulations pertaining to the WIC program.
