Job Description

This position will assist Structure and Bridge Safety Inspection staff with in-depth visual and mechanical inspections of highway structures such as signal structures, overhead signs, lighting structures and bridges /culverts to identify deterioration, damage and defects that could affect the life, serviceability and safety of structures. This position conducts on-site field inspections; compiles information and assists with inspection reports and documentation; verifies file information on structures and updates as needed; assists with structure inventory records and file maintenance and updates.

This is an hourly wage position (no benefits) that can work up to 1,500 hours between May 1st and April 30th of each year.

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to perform inspections and prepare and/or draft structural drawings and sketches. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and to follow safety practices & procedures. Skill in engineering math. Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include proficiency in the use of MS Office software. Experience preparing automated reports, entering data and maintaining databases and files. Ability to read maps and follow directions. Valid driver’s license is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge/experience in bridge maintenance/repair or structural inspection. Ability to diagnose causes of damage and deterioration to structures. Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications. Associate’s degree or coursework in engineering or engineering technology.

Special Requirements

Valid driver’s license and safety footwear required. Ability to work in diverse conditions to include working at heights, over and in water, and exposure to insects and animals, as well as working in confined spaces, close proximity to heavy traffic, and inclement weather. Ability to perform heavy manual labor to include standing, bending, climbing and lifting up to 50 lbs. Must be able to complete First Aid, CPR, work zone safety and flagger certifications. Must be able to obtain a valid CDL and DOT medical card within 6 months of employment and maintain thereafter.

Fingerprint-based criminal history record check, references, work history and DMV driving record will be verified prior to employment. Selected finalist must pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen. May be required to work outside normal hours in emergencies such as during inclement weather, including nights, weekends and holidays.
