Job Description

Salem District is seeking qualified individuals at our Roanoke County and Botetourt County Area Headquarters to perform a combination of skilled equipment operation, preventive maintenance and manual labor for the Salem Residency. Equipment operation includes but is not limited to backhoe, dump truck, loader, motorgrader, tractor/bush hog and similar equipment. Flag traffic, set up work zones and traffic control, cut brush, clean ditches/debris and patch potholes. Perform emergency roadway operations as an essential employee during snow/severe weather events and other emergency events; must be willing to work outside of normal work hours during emergency conditions. Positions may be assigned to the residency work order crew. The current vacancy is located at the Troutville Area Headquarters in Botetourt County. Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of roadway and roadside maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures. Demonstrated experience in equipment operation and performing preventive maintenance. Knowledge of safety policies, procedures, and programs. Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand-held and power tools, and light, medium, and heavy duty equipment used for roadway and roadside maintenance and repair. Ability to perform heavy manual labor; and to follow oral and written instructions. Valid Driver’s License. Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 6 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

Significant demonstrated experience using commercial sized tractors in the mowing of roadway right of ways. Significant demonstrated experience using heavy equipment such as backhoes, motor graders, commercial sized tractors, and rubber tire loaders to perform tasks maintaining roadway drainage. Significant demonstrated experience using various types of surface treatment and asphalt repair equipment in the maintenance of roadways. Significant demonstrated experience using CDL required dump trucks to perform hauling of materials, spreading of stone, and snow removal from roadways. Certification in VDOT’s Basic Work Zone Traffic Control Training preferred. Virginia DMV CDL with tanker endorsement preferred.

Special Requirements

Additional vacancies may be filled from this recruitment within the Salem Residency (Roanoke & Botetourt Counties) within 90 days of closing. Frequently required heavy manual labor to include standing, bending, and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs. Ability to obtain flagger and work zone certifications. References, work history, and DMV records will be verified. Selected applicant must complete a pre-employment physical and drug screening. Requires approved safety shoes. Will be required to work outside normal hours in emergencies, inclement weather, and heavy traffic conditions.
