Job Description

The primary role of the Director of Campus Safety/Chief of Police is to protect the physical safety and security of the campus community through training, preparation, presence, and observation.

• Emergency Planning including Continuity of Operations Planning, serving as Emergency Coordinator including updating emergency plans and policies and conducting exercises and drills
• Coordinating emergency notification systems including testing and training
• Providing campus training on safety practices, leading the Incident Command Team and Threat Assessment Team, and being the first responder to incidents on campus
• Filing all required security reports: The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Act, safety reports to VCCS, and others as required
• Assuring compliance with all campus safety training and education requirements included in federal, state and local legislation
• Responding to students, faculty and staff concerns related to security and safety and coordinating with local law enforcement as appropriate
• Maintaining and updating campus safety documentation
• Maintain and update campus Hazardous Materials plan and oversee compliance.
• Directing the contracted security officers
• Overseeing automatic door lock system and ID badge system
• Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
• Certified by the Department for Criminal Justice Services
• Associates degree in Administration of Justice or related field
• Demonstrated leadership skills
• Strong communication skills, including oral, written and listening skills. Must be able to interact effectively with students, faculty, staff, and supervisors
• Ability to update policies based on new laws, guidelines and best practices and to communicate policy changes to campus community as needed
• Ability to work effectively with minimal direction
• Strong teamwork, planning and coordination skills
• Strong problem solving and time management skills
• Must pass a background investigation

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor degree preferred; Five years of experience as a police officer, college campus service is preferred.
