Job Description

The Virginia Department of State Police is seeking qualified applicants for a Computer Systems Senior Engineer position in the Information and Communication Technologies Division located in North Chesterfield County, Virginia. This is an Exempt position; therefore, this position is excluded from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act due to the nature of duties and job responsibilities.


• Monitors, analyzes, and maintains all Enterprise class server systems. Interfaces with system users and vendor support personnel to resolve software problems. Develops and maintains recovery strategies and procedures. Ensures security of computing environments. Keeps abreast of new features and issues to aid systems staff in patch management. Contributes to identifying and fulfilling daily, weekly and monthly goals of the Engineering unit. Identifies and incorporates where applicable latest techniques and trends in Distributed Open systems platforms. Sets up and manages DR hardware/software environments.
• Supports and maintains the Netbackup Environment; the Footprints Environment; and the Biscom Environment.
• Installs and upgrades of operating system patches; and upgrades are performed timely, accurately, and in cooperation with other appropriate teams. Relevant documentation is kept up to date.
• Monitors and maintains the enterprise class disk storage array.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Participates in effective continuity of operations planning by serving as a member of the Continuation Team.


Minimum Qualifications


• Considerable knowledge of and experience with Enterprise class servers, and thorough understanding of Fiber Channel HBA and Enterprise class disk arrays.
• Knowledge and understanding of procedures for backing up and restoring enterprise class servers.
• Knowledge of VMware vSphere, DNS, LDAP, Web services, WebSphere, cable management, jumpstart technologies, KickStart technologies, Shell Scripting and of JAVA architecture.
• Ability to troubleshoot enterprise servers and be familiar with performance tuning and monitoring; to automate routine tasks and provide documentation and training when required; to work independently on assigned projects; to translate user requests into actionable UNIX related tasks; to write shell scripts; to research and find technical solutions; to prioritize & delegate tasks; to understand & satisfy data security needs; to develop effective working relationship with various levels of agency, state, and vendor personnel; and to assess and arrange for training needs.
• Graduation from an accredited college or university with major study in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field is preferred.
• Considerable Information Technology experience.
• Experience with the following hardware/software is highly desirable: Sun Solaris 10/11, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Enterprise backup solution (Netbackup), Fujitsu SAN hardware, Oracle and Fujitsu Sparc Systems, Brocade switch, Enterprise Storage Tape Library, Quantum Tape library, x86 hardware platform, IBM TAMeb.
• In-depth experience with UNIX operating systems; experience with Solaris virtualization (zones / LDOM); excellent understanding of UNIX security; excellent communicative & collaborative skills; Superior troubleshooting skills for UNIX support; experience with RHEL; experience with VMware; experience with troubleshooting UNIX problems; experience with physical and logical concepts of UNIX file structures; thorough knowledge of and experience with performance monitoring, system testing, and software patch Installation and testing; experience with data security, backup, recovery, and restart techniques; experience with standard networking protocols; experience with medium to large-scale UNIX environments; experience with OS upgrades, patch installation and testing; and experience with providing technical support; experience with UNIX scripting.
• Exposure to Java and Web Services; and exposure to WebSphere are beneficial.
