Job Description

Provide students with accurate and high quality academic and transfer advising. Advise students on specific degree programs and requirements. Assists students in developing educational plans that are consistent with their educational and career goals. Assess and evaluate student’s progress toward their program of study. Advise students on course selections, requirements, and expectations toward their program of study. Interprets college placement tests and other educational transcripts for course placement. Explains college policies and procedures. Understand and practice all rules and regulations regarding FERPA. Collaborate and direct students to academic and student support resources that will ensure academic and student success. Utilize the Early Alert system – Student Assistance and Intervention for Learning Success (SAILS) to follow-up with identified students experiencing academic difficulties and record advising notes. Provide advising to students through email or in a live on-line chat environment. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution. Significant years of academic advising, admissions, and/or career development experience or training. Knowledgeable of current student services and development theories and best practices. Demonstrated understanding of college programs, academic requirements, policies, and procedures. Ability to advise and understand diverse populations. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to a broad constituency, including administrators, faculty, staff, students, and parents. Ability to plan, organize, manage time, and meet departmental deadlines. Excellent organizational and problem solving skills. Possess proficient computer literacy skills and willingness to learn new software applications. Must be able to work at all campus locations. Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in counseling, education, psychology, student development, or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution. Possess knowledge about the Virginia Community College System or prior community college academic advising experience.

Hours of Duty: not to exceed 29 hours per week.
